Guardian Mother Spirit in My Computer (2023), Pari
‘Guardian Mother Spirit in My Computer’ is a pixel tapestry depicting legacies of folk religion and spiritual practices within Vietnamese culture. Using the medium of the pixel as both digital unit and spiritual particle, the tapestry offers a digital portal into a potent universe of spirit worship and magical cults. The central deity, or Guardian Mother Spirit, acts as a gateway into an ecosystem alive with ancestral spirits and “digital” offerings. My own expressions of Vietnamese animist beliefs are woven in, where spirits are shown to be embodied within animals, plants and other objects of the natural world.
The work is ultimately an attempt to reclaim these cultural stories through a nostalgic digital language; pixels. It is way of forging a deeper connection with my parents’ homeland and showcasing a more spiritual-minded way of relating to our environment.
